Click here to see how I crate trained my puppy! Crate training a puppy is a great choice especially if you want to keep your puppy out of trouble when you are away or at night. Crate training a puppy is a very useful method for housebreaking any puppy. Properly crate trained puppies tend to be more secure and are easier to manage.
Crate training your puppy helps you with house training and housebreaking because dogs will not
"mess" in their den unless there is simply no where else to go. Crate training also helps establish
you as the "alpha" dog which, in turn, helps you train your puppy.
A crate is simply a confined area. A box isn't good because your puppy can not see what is going crate a puppy

on around him/her. A wire crate is best because your puppy can see, smell, and hear what is going
on around him/her and adjust to you and your family. Also, the crate needs to have a lock. And make sure you select the proper size, not to small but not to big.
Initially when you are crate training a puppy, the puppy will feel scared of going inside the crate. So, entice him into it. This can be done by placing some special food for him in the crate. When he goes inside to fetch for it, praise him and repeat the course of action for several minutes. This will build his confidence and he will have a natural feeling to go in the crate. Any voluntary feeling of entering the crate will go a long way. Remember to keep the doors of the crate open all this while.
In the early stages of Crate training your puppy, only put the puppy in during the night when you are asleep. It may be necessary to endure some puppy whining. It is all right to comfort the puppy, but don't let it out just because it is whining. At all other times, the crate door should be left open. The puppy should only be locked in the crate when you are away from your residence. The crate should be big enough to allow your dog to turn around, but not so large that it has enough room to use a corner for a toilet. shepard sitting in milk crate

Your puppy should have a nice balance between activity time and crate time because dogs require an ample amount of exercise time in order for them to continue to be healthy. This is an essential part of properly Crate training your puppy and potty training him or her. Being in the crate for too long or too often can actually have a negative effect on your dog's personality and behavior as a puppy.
Never use your puppy's crate to punish him or her. Do not shake or rattle the crate in any way, either. The crate must be a safe place for your dog. If you violate this safety, this can mean that your dog may have behavioral problems as he or she gets older. For an outstanding training product on crate training your puppy please visit this link."Secrets to Dog Training"

Excellent advice on crate training, Now that my dogs are all grown up they like to just go chill out in their crates when things get noisy in the house. We worked really hard to make their "bedrooms" a place they like to be.
